Congratulations to Mannan Arshad for being announced as March 2024 Senior of the Month.
Schaumburg High School is proud to present Mannan Arshad as our March Senior of the Month. Mannan has established an impressive track record of academic success as well as making efforts to consider the community and world around him. He has worked diligently as a student, a leader on the Debate team and National Honor Society, and has already begun research on astrophysics projects.
Mannan has succeeded in some of the toughest coursework that Schaumburg High School has to offer. It’s often tempting to believe that such achievements come easily or naturally, but Mannan makes sure to carefully plan and organize his time in order to have the greatest opportunity to keep up with school as well as making certain to make an impact upon the school itself. Teachers and coaches alike see that he not only enjoys challenging himself, but also encouraging people around him. Because of these habits and skills, it’s easy to understand how Mannan was selected as a NASA SEES intern. The program provides students with exposure to NASA research. During the program, they learn how to interpret NASA satellite data while working with scientists and engineers to help understand: Earth systems, natural hazards and climate science. The internship required him to travel onsite to the McDonald's observatory in Ft. Davis Texas to collaborate with a UT Austin professor. Mannan is not comfortable being a one-dimensional person, however. So, in order to avoid burnout, he prioritizes working on activities that he enjoys to balance his studies and manage stress.
The academic achievements that Mannan has enjoyed have been matched by his participation and leadership in various activities and student groups. He has been on the Debate Team, Math Team, BPA, Science Academic Challenge, National Honor Society, and Saxon LIFT. Mannan was named a Debate team captain, after a stunningly successful debut as a freshman. But it’s not just his success as a debater that deserves attention; he is involved in the details, helping his teammates with careful research and great rebuttals. Under his leadership as a three-year captain, the team has tripled in size compared to his freshman year. It would come as no surprise then, to learn that Mannan was selected as a member of the school chapter of the NHS and was elected to the office of President of that august group. He has made certain to give back to his community as a Schaumburg Library Trustee as well as through the work that the NHS has done.
Mannan is a warm and genuine person who is a pleasure to be around. Despite the fact that he has a disciplined work ethic, Mannan does not allow himself to get tunnel vision; he makes sure to motivate and help those around him. Mannan is a model of excellence. He is leaving his mark on SHS and will surely do so in the future as he turns his attention to the stars.
